Get Out The Count:Census 2020

WHAT IS THE CENSUS AND WHY THE CENSUS MATTERS FOR OUR COMMUNITIES IN THE DMV FACT SHEETS

The 2020 Census data will determine how the next 10 years of representation will look like for our communities and how much federal funding is distributed for critical programs that our families and communities use. Households will begin receiving the official Census Bureau mail beginning March 12-20 with information on how to respond to the 2020 Census online. According to data we compiled from Census 2010 and the American Community Survey, there are at least 675,194 individuals who identify with being part of AMEMSA communities in DC, VA, and MD. An undercount would have negative consequences on our communities. The U.S. Census is an opportunity to accurately count Arab, Middle Eastern, Muslim, and South Asian (AMEMSA) communities and allocate funding for critical resources. Getting an accurate count Census count of AMEMSA communities in the DMV is about $40 billion dollars in federal funding.

POSTERS

Justice For Muslims Collective, in collaboration with Erik Martinez Resly, created an “I Count Census Poster Series.” As part of our community outreach efforts, JMC has been asking businesses, faith-based institutions, and community centers to put these posters in visible spaces so community members are aware of the Census. Contact us with any questions or if you would like more information about JMC’s I Count Poster Series.

JMC SOCIAL MEDIA KIT AND CENSUS WEEK OF ACTION: MARCH 25-APRIL 1

Census 2020 is scheduled to happen between March and July.  While there may be delays due to COVID-19, we encourage our communities to take the Census as soon as possible.  JMC will be launching a Census Week of Action beginning March 25th-April 1st. We will launch this with a webinar on March 25th from 12-1pm. We encourage you all to take part in the Census. The Census is a critical tool that’s used to allocate resources and determine the number of Congressional seats.  Though the Census has a racist history leading to undercounting communities of color, Justice for Muslims Collective has been conducting outreach throughout the DMV so we can make sure that we count.  But we need your help to reach out to as many people and communities as possible. Can you commit to sharing at least 2 of our social media posts below each day from March 25-April 1st?  Will you help us make sure that we count?  If you have any questions about the contents of this social media toolkit, contact us at dcjusticeformuslims@gmail.com
